When You Were the Universe
Authors note: This one was really hard for me to write, but it needed to be written. This one is for Ardon and Olivia, and anyone else who needed to hear this.
The universe had a beginning.
According to the standard theory our universe sprang into existence as a singularity around 13.7 billion years ago.
And due to it's nature of expansion our universe can be traced back in time to an originating single point.
This thought essentially ties back to Einstein's theory of relativity which states that the universe is expanding and the far parts of it are moving away from us faster than the speed of light.
The speed of light can be measured in something we call light years, the distance light travels in one year. Light traveling at a speed of 300,000 km/s.
Light from the moon travels to earth in one second
Light from the sun travels to earth in eight seconds
Light from Sirius, the brightest star in our sky, travels to earth in eight years.
So every time we look at our night sky we are looking back in time.
We are observing the moon and stars how they used to be instead of how they are.
The universe had a beginning, and so did we.
Our singularity tasted like chocolate cupcakes,
Smelled like exhaust from my sister's car down the street,
And felt like the warmth of the sun when you placed your hands on my hips.
Our singularity can be traced back to the single moment when the negative space between your lips and mine disappeared.
The sun didn't exist then,
The entire solar system revolved around us,
We were the only source of light and heat.
Gravity didn't exist either,
The sky fell beneath our feet.
And in a single moment nothing became everything.
We were a big bang level event.
We couldn't be explained.
When you were the universe,
our black hole hearts reached out to one another.
When you were the universe,
our fingers traced constellations into each other's skin,
so if someone turned out the light we call the sun, I'd have a map back to you.
It would light my way to your smile, your heart, your arms when I got scared of the dark.
When you were the universe, we fell into an orbit.
Revolving and rotating around one another.
But you were the universe, and Einstein's theory of relativity tells me that you're expanding and the far parts of you are moving away from me faster than the speed of light.
The universe is expanding and the world is getting smaller but neither of these things bring me closer to you.
None of these close the distance between you and I.
So like when we look up at the night sky and see the past,
I look at you and see how you used to be
because of the increasing distance between you and me.
The constellations I traced are fading with time, their light dimming.
I can't find my way back to you anymore.
And if I did, I don't know if it'd be the real you.
Because we can't trust the stars and we can't trust our hearts,
they aren't what they used to be.
